The Expendables – Review

1 10 2010

Movie- The Expendables

Director- Sylvester Stallone

Cast- Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li

Genre- Action & Adventure

Release- August 13th 2010

If you are a big fan of old school macho action movies, this is the movie for you. It is loud, explosive and not short of blood spatter.  The plot was pretty common and the dialogue and the jokes were a bit boring. It was fantastic to see the super cast together, but Stallone did go a little too far to make non good actors to act. Jason statham was the real star actually.  The much too hyped about  cameo of the big 2 stars was disappointing because it was just too short.  Stallone proves again that he knows what he is doing.  Would like to see more of old school stars to join the Expendables 2 like, Van Damme, Wesly Snipes, Chuck Norris, Steven Seagal, Hulk Hogan, The Rock Dwayne Johnson and some Asian talents like Tony Jaa and Donnie Yen. A bigger role by Arnold Schwarzenegger would make it even more awesome.

SPOILER WARNING!

Predators is the movie that comes closest to a worthy sequel to Predator 1. However it is far from being perfect. It could have really been a great movie. The storyline and the casting was perfect. Unfortunately it lacked  the spark that made predator 1 so special. There was not too much character building, acting was excellent and Adrian Brody delivered really well, but the filmmakers could have made better use of stars like Danny Trejo and Laurence Fishburne and capitalized our their star power. I was expecting much more from those characters, but was very disappointed to find out about how it was wasted. I personally find it silly how the character Fishburne was playing foolishly died, I mean he survived for so long alone in that planet, and suddenly he risks everything just to steal somebodies food/guns? I was actually confused, because the character was initially portrayed as a real smart tough guy, even though he was a bit cuckoo due the duration he was stuck in the planet. It’s a pity how somebody who killed 3 predators died in such a lame way. Danny Trejo could too have had some crazy moments with some big knives and machetes before he was killed. What I do not understand is, why did the Character of Topher Grace suddenly at the last moment decided to bring out his serial killer instinct? The filmmakers could have made the story spicy if they wanted without that twist, I mean the character simply could have tried to give the girl as bait and think of a plan to escape rather than acting like a weirdo. The CGI used was modest and appropriate but Predators could have used a bit more visual effects on the actions scenes. I was expecting some real fast and visually spectacular fight scenes, somewhat like in Ninja Assassin. For example the fight scene with the Japanese Yakuza and the predator, I mean that really was an epic moment,  the filmmakers could have really made it more dramatic and visually stunning. But unfortunately  too much of it was left to our hungry imagination.  Considering the modest budget, the movie is a good watch. I enjoyed watching it but really wished it was a bit better. I am looking forward for a sequel to this, with better characters, fantastic visuals and more interaction with the alien planet.
